Big Easy – Stellenbosch

The Big Easy Restaurant is a wine bar and restaurant but has become one of my favourite places to enjoy a breakfast on the weekend.  The building it’s located in dates back to 1798 and the style consists of a Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture blend.

The restaurant has a variety of rooms and outside areas to choose from. This makes you feel like you’re enjoying a meal in someone’s house instead of a restaurant.

We chose to sit outside on the porch exiting the cigar and library since it was a lovely day in Stellenbosch.

If you’re in the mood for a delicious breakfast, I would recommend the Eggs Benedict with Salmon as well as the Big Easy Breakfast.

If you are more interested in a lunch, then you definitely need to check out the specials they have.

The restaurant is situated in Dorp street and there is parking available next to the restaurant which is convenient.

The wine bar has more than 170 different wines to offer and a fabulous setting to enjoy it.

Cocos – Hermanus

Between the striking ocean view and the casual island vibe, one cannot help but to relish and relax when visiting Cocos.

The setting is amazing and patrons sitting next to the window can really enjoy a spectacular view of the old harbour and even spot whales when visiting during spring time.

If you think you’ve spotted a whale (like I did) you can grab the binoculars to confirm your suspicions, or like me, sadly realise that it’s just seaweed.

Despite the fact that it was Cocktail Happy Hour, we all ordered from their intrinsic variety of craft beer. We enjoyed a selection of Van Hungs Pumpkin Ale, Johnny Gold Weiss, Lumberjack Amber Ale and Whale Tail Ale – all local SA brands.

With the tasty beer came great food as well. We had the Nachos with bacon and Chicken Strips with chips.

We had a remarkable time at Coco’s and will certainly return again and again.

Tolbos Bistro – Gansbaai

Tolbos – Afrikaans translation to English:  tumbleweed

In the Western Cape there are lots of hidden gems when it comes to small coastal towns. Gansbaai is no exception, and once you have truly explored the area you can’t help but to fall in love with the serenity and simplicity of it. Gansbaai and its surrounding area holds a special place in my heart as this is where we’ve been having our family holidays for the past 10 years. Don’t be fooled by this quiet little town during the off-peak season, during the holiday period it’s bursting at the seams. This is also a great White Shark cage diving  and whale watching destination (Kleinbaai).

We visited one of the restaurants, Tolbos Bistro, in Gansbaai for a family Sunday lunch.

Upon arrival you immediately feel welcome and start feeling relaxed.

If the weather permits (i.e. it’s not too windy or raining) you can be spoiled by sitting outside and enjoy the spectacular view of the harbour.

It’s also a lovely area for the whole family (especially the kids) to enjoy.

Since it was a bit windy, we took up a place inside where we were still able to enjoy the lovely views outside.  The atmosphere inside has a very homey feel to it, as if I’m sitting in my mom’s kitchen.

The food was divine, and we all finished our plates with nothing to spare. We even had space to squeeze in some desert.

We enjoyed our visit to Tolbos Bistro tremendously and will keep supporting the local restaurants in Gansbaai.

Wijnhuis – Stellenbosch

We recently visited Wijnhuis in Stellenbosch for a family Sunday lunch.  It was a great experience and we all enjoyed the food, drinks, atmosphere and service tremendously.

We were seated upstairs with a cosy fireplace creating a homey atmosphere and looking out onto the courtyard since it was a rainy day.

We were served with friendly eagerness which added to the fabulous experience. The wine list has a wide variety to choose from, as well as quantities to choose from (of course I chose a carafe and my mom only a glass).

Dying with hunger, we were quite happy to see our generous portions when the food arrived after a very short wait.  The menu offers something for everyone, from casual tasteful burgers to fancy steaks and wild game.  I ordered the chicken schnitzel with mushroom pasta, a combination I have never seen anywhere, but orchestrated a tasty combination.

I usually say no for desert, but my eye caught the Cheese cake on the menu and I decided to just go for it. It was delicious, and disappeared off my plate within seconds (it was gone so quick I couldn’t even take a photo of it).

The ice cream with chocolate sauce is divine, and why wouldn’t it be if the chocolate sauce is home made.

We will most definitely recommend Wijnhuis to anyone. We had a lovely time and really appreciate the tasty food and friendly service. Now one of my favourites in Stellenbosch.
